In between the years 1859-1898 no less than 14 organs where made by the Cavaille-Coll firm for the Gipuzkoaprovince alone (it is the area in and around San Sebastian). From these organs a number is still kept in its orignal and this organ in Azkoitia is one of them. The organ in S:t Maria la Real was built in 1898 and it was the last organ built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll himself. The organist and composer Baron Fernand de laTombelle, whose Pastoral op.33 is heard on this recording, was parlicipating at the inauguration concert on February 8, l 898. Shortly after this inauguration the organ firm management was taken over by Charles Mutin, a former co-worker of the same, and one year later (1899) Mr. Aristide Cavaille-Coll passed away. In 1976 the organ was thoroughly restored by the organ builder Gabre Blancafort.
Mathias Kjellgren, very talented Swedish organist, plays a subtile selection of French music on this documentaryly interesting and artistically impressive CD.
